At Hills Road, we offer one of the most extensive enrichment and extra-curricular programmes in the country.
Whether you are interested in sport, drama, business, art, music, community service or something completely
different, the range of opportunities is enormous. Here are some examples of our students’ experiences.
“A definite highlight for me during my time at Hills Road was performing in the College production
of Les Miserables. I chose the performance as my enrichment during my first year at college and was
apprehensive to begin with as I didn't know what to expect or what would be asked of me. After just
one rehearsal I knew that I was going to love the entire process and it was a great way of meeting
new people. Although the whole cast had to dedicate a lot of time to the end performance, it was
one of which we were all extremely proud. The whole cast worked together and even if we did not have
one of the lead roles we were still made to feel a crucial part in the final piece. The many lunchtime
and after-school rehearsals were what made the final piece so good and the school's theatre is a great
space in which to perform. My time rehearsing and performing in Les Miserables is definitely one of my
greatest memories from Hills Road and one that will stay with me for a very long time.”
Grace Bayfield
“One of the biggest highlights of my time at Hills was the PE Trip to Boston where I got to see the
American model for sport for both school sport and the professional levels. I am in the College cricket
team which is very enjoyable as it gives me the chance to play cricket and meet some of my friends and
have fun. The Sports and Tennis Centre is good as it offers the opportunity to play sport during
free periods and I have been able to play sports like football, tennis, badminton and squash with all
my friends and created friendly rivalries.”
Robert Finch
“Hills Road has been a great place to study. The sports team enrichment has been so much fun as
you meet lots of new people. This year I have been part of a successful netball team which has made
it through to the British Colleges National finals, a unique experience. I was also lucky enough to be
one of 15 students who visited our partner school, Ndamase in South Africa. It was undoubtedly a trip
of a lifetime and an experience which I will never forget.”
Liv Tenberg
“Playing football created a great chance to be involved with a number of friendship groups and provided the
opportunity to play with and against players of a high standard. The National Cup tournament was possibly
the highlight of my football career to date.”
Jake Thomas Brown
“The Newsday competition and the Phoenix Newspaper were really fun to get involved in; I made lots of new
friends and the end result was something to be really proud of. Hills Road has a really positive atmosphere
and it makes such a nice change from secondary school to be treated as adults. The teachers are all really
enthusiastic, and they know their stuff, and there's always something going on to get involved in.”
Zosia Krasodomska-Jones
“The Duke of Edinburgh award has been one of the best extra-curricular aspects of Hills Road. The three
expeditions were immensely enjoyable and well run by the Duke of Edinburgh staff. I enjoyed it so much I
have volunteered to help out once I've left the College.”
Tom Campbell
"Hamburg was an amazing chance to be immersed in life in Germany and by the end of 10 days we'd all
got used to doing everything in German. Working in a primary school with 6 year olds who couldn't speak
English was incredibly daunting at first but the sense of achievement being able to communicate with them
and become a part of the community was really immense and has definitely made me want to go back."
Nicola Deboys
“Since my visit to Montpellier, I feel that I have become a much better linguist. It has greatly
improved my fluency in the language and tackling exercises in French has become much easier. The
exchange was a valuable experience for me as I made many great friends and really got to know everyone
who participated in it. I will definitely never forget my trip to Montpellier."
Becky Wilkinson
“The Montpellier trip was amazing, everyone made such good friends not only with the English but also the
French students, and temperatures of 22 degrees at the beginning of March just made the whole trip
perfect! It was one of the most productive trips I have ever been on, as well as being such fun. I
really enjoyed it, and not only that, we have made such good friends that a group of us are planning
to go back to visit our exchanges in the summer, followed by a return visit from them. Definitely do the
exchange, you will honestly regret it if not!”
Beth Collett
“There is a huge scope of opportunity to take part in concerts, from trying out self-written material in a
lunchtime concert to a packed audience, to the once in a lifetime concerts at prestigious venues such as
King's College Chapel. You don't have to be a virtuoso performer, people appreciate your work and are open to
experimental performances. I've done a lot of stage crew work at concerts which has been a great experience.”
Ed Fraser
“There is always plenty of opportunity to get involved in performing in concerts at Hills Road.
We recently performed the Mozart Requiem in King's College Chapel which was a really exciting experience and
is one I will remember for a long time!”
Harriet Caddick
“I've really enjoyed Robotics as it provides us with the opportunity to be creative and build a robot
which we went on to compete with against other teams in New York, an amazing city to visit where I had
great fun with the team. We're also responsible for assisting at Lego League events and our own fundraising,
which allows us to demonstrate our robots to the public and has provided many wacky fundraising ideas which
has given me and the other team members much entertainment.”

“Well, as the picture suggests the ski trip isn’t just about skiing! On the trip, from our past
experiences, you are guaranteed to make a load of new friends and of course do a lot of skiing.
The actual skiing experience was awesome and the runs varied from slightly insane (Harakiri) to
tamer slopes. The huge variety of runs makes the trip suitable for everyone from beginners to experts.
We had an amazing time in February ’09 and it promises to be a highly enjoyable experience for all in
February 2010, for those of you lucky enough to be able to come along.”
