Choosing your AS level subjects
Choosing your AS level subjects can be a daunting prospect,
not least because there are so many to choose from. Whatever final decision, you need to have
considered the following:
- what subjects you enjoy
- what subjects you are good at
- the career implications of your choice
- your predicted grades; do they qualify you to study that subject?
Support and advice will be available when you are making your choice during the College Open Evenings
(in November) and, if you are invited for interview, during a guidance discussion in the spring term.
The Wider Curriculum
In addition to AS and A level courses, students also select courses from the
Wider Curriculum. These courses provide a valuable opportunity for students to develop
transferable academic skills, to make links between their studies and the contemporary
world, and to develop new areas of personal and academic interest, always an exciting
challenge. Participation in the Wider Curriculum is a central feature of a students’
time at Hills Road. The Wider Curriculum contains a mixture of compulsory and voluntary courses,
and some of these courses are accredited. All parts of the Wider Curriculum share in
common an immediate relevance to developing the skills required for successful study
at advanced level, while also providing access to new skills and interests to be
taken forward into the world of work or further study.
In Year 12, the Wider Curriculum comprises the Academic Research Course (ARC), Enrichment and Citizenship activities.
In Year 13, the Wider Curriculum comprises choices from Critical Thinking, World Development, Science in Society,
the Extended Project, Citizenship activities and Enrichment (optional).
