Whichever of the three separate English courses you choose, we aim to teach you to think for yourself and to equip you with an intellectual toolkit with which to analyse any text that crosses your path.
You will find that individual creative contributions are valued and that we expect all our students to participate. You will be working within a mature learning community that is both supportive and challenging.

- • Voices is the student-run society which offers students the chance to explore their interest in English beyond the classroom. Within Voices we currently have the following student-run groups: Creative Fiction Society, Poetry Forum, Book Club, Film-makers Union, Comedy Players, and PaperMail, a student produced electronic newspaper.
- • We have a weekly programme of events. These have included a poetry celebration on National Poetry Day, speakers from Cambridge colleges, and being published by a media professional. The department organises regular conferences on topics such as ‘Post-Colonial Literature’, ‘The Monologue’ and ‘The Modern Novel’.
- • We run several theatre visits; recent trips have included Othello at The Globe, Statement of Regret at The National and The Tempest at the Mumford in Cambridge.
- • For keen journalists our Newsday team produces a newspaper in a single day.
- • We offer support surgeries, with a dedicated session once a week for each English course.
