Here are the details of the course you would like to enrol on...
This course is a personal overview of the History of Art in Europe. It will consist of a series of snapshots rather than a connected narrative. But hopefully it will have something for everyone, both beginners and those who are already familiar with the subject. We shall be covering the whole period from Prehistory through to the 20th c. and be examining a host of key pieces, both familiar and unusual. There will be sessions on such iconic works as the Ste Chapelle, Paris, on Hogarth and Picasso. But we shall also be looking at the extraordinary mosaics of the Roman villa of Piazza Amerina in Sicily, Tilman Riemenschneiderand the devastating work of the German, Jewish, painter, Felix Nussbaum. There will be the opportunity to study pieces of architecture and sculpture as well as paintings. Europe’s artistic heritage is second to none – wonderfully inventive and humane, it is full of works which not only entrance the eye but stimulate the mind and move the heart. Come along and get to grips with the exciting world of Art History!
An optional, Saturday, jaunt to a place of interest may be organised
